Academic Literacy, Learning & Study Skills - Teacher as Researcher Projects

Reading & Learning

There is an extensive body of international research providing evidence that academic difficulties promote - or at least exacerbate - behavioural issues.  An integral element of NBSS research is the exploration of the association between challenging behaviour and academic difficulties.

Research is central to NBSS academic literacy, learning and study skills support. At present, the NBSS is co-ordinating Teacher as Researcher: Literacy and Learning Research Projects across a number of schools. Teachers are engaged as researchers in their schools piloting a range of literacy, learning and study skills development projects with students. The methods and approaches adopted are varied and creative. To date research projects have been carried out on such areas as:

  • explicitly teaching students specific study skills
  • explicitly teaching students comprehension and learning strategies
  • developing specific reading skills
  • developing students’ writing skills
  • developing handwriting skills with students

Teachers also carry out Teacher as Researcher Projects that look at the impact of using specific reading programmes, resources and approaches with students.
